Worship, Part 1/5

Translate/ Terjemahan: Indonesia

One day Stevi came into a service in a church. The service was leaving an impression on her as she amazed how was the worship session is conducted. “Music is good, the Song is great…..This is just what I wanted”, she thought. However, this momentary feeling will not impact her long lastingly. She started to fell boredom after years of experiencing this kind of worship, all excitement starting to fade away.

Psychologically, music can move someone into a thrilled or a relaxed state. Show business understands this quite well, where different kinds of music are introduced in different setting in the movie. In order to convey a sad scene, a sad rhythm will be played; to convey happy scene therefore lively music will be played along. In the live concert, the singer even can excite and initiate audience participation through his/her music and song. No doubt, psychologically, music has it value to touch human emotion.

Most of the church have understood this and have prepared quite well in their selection of song and music when conducting their worship service. However, the over emphasis over this can bring a deadly blow to church. Worship has become a mere churchman entertainment.

Lost of Inspirational Incentive
We can express to God that we delight in him through worship and many evidences in scriptures also shows that He will delight in us. Furthermore, we can also draw ourselves near to him and God draw near to us through our worship. This fact is all equally true; however, the emphases over the inspirational incentive which can edify the believer have already lost within the lyric of songs.

People of old, the hymns writer, have written many meaningful songs which are able to edify other in their walk with God. These songs were deep in its meaning and very inspirational. The basis of this is no less than the focus of the writer on their personal experience and conviction toward God.

However, the shift has been taken place; focus on content has been replaced with the focus on technique. All this meaningful and inspirational songs have been replaced with contemporary Christian song which has little capability as edifying tools (note: some of songs still have this quality). The songs have become tools to satisfy our ear (feeling) rather then our soul.
